Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano

Achim von Arnim (1781-1831) and Clemens Brentano (1778-1842), both poet's friends, one a Berliner, the other born in Ehrenbreitstein, travelled around the Rhine together. They were united in her longing for the “blue flower of the romanticism”. In songs, fairy tales and legends they sang of the Rhine and announced the romantic charm of the Rhine Valley soon in complete Germany.

Especially the legend of the magician Loreley on the high rock on the Rhine fictitious by Brentano “riß viel Herzen hin” and became known in the version of Heinrich Heine all over the world.

In his Rhine fairy tales Brentano lets get the children of the city of Mainz in the power of the Rhine king. Only if for every child a fairy tale is told, the Rhine king let them out again. In this fairy tale Brentano weaves coloured patterns from own inventions, classic myths and legends of the Rhine.

V. Arnim and Brentano have made themselves also deserving as a publisher of the first comprehensive collection of old and new folk songs which they called “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”.
