Mäuseturm (mouse tower)

The Mäuseturm, an elegant tower which stands on an island in the Rhine between Bingen and the castle ruins Ehrenfels.

With the establishment of the tower 1270 the duty arrangement was completed in the castle Ehrenfels.

The name of the tower combines a legend which reports, that a Mainz bishop has fled before mice in this tower who pursued him because of a bad action.

The tower belongs as a watch-tower to the castle Ehrenfels. The name “Mäuseturm” has his origins in the word toll (duty) or in the word muse which means peer.
