Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810 – 1876)

Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-1876), one of the best known poets of premarch, lived several days in Assmannshausen, before he fled to England into exile.

In the Rheingau (Rhine Area) he made friends with the poet Adelheid von Stolterfoth and the famous American lyricist Henry Wadsworth Longfellow with whom together he visited Johannisberg (mountain Johannis).

In the Rheingau at the hotel Krone (crown) he completed his collection of the political poems which have become known under the title “Ein Glaubensbekenntnis” (a creed). In these poems Freiligrath fights with enthusiasm for the liberal democracy. Because of these poems he had to flee into exile to England.
